Canvas apps give you full control over the interface and suit focused task apps; model-driven apps shine in data-centric applications with many tables, roles and business rules. For the data layer: SharePoint lists are fine for simple structures and work without additional licences, while Dataverse carries complex data models, fine-grained permissions and large data volumes. And when low-code reaches its limits, it does not have to be a rupture: with SPFx we extend SharePoint, and with Power Apps code apps – generally available since August 2026 – full React applications run on the Power Platform.

SharePoint lists are sufficient for simple data structures and work with the Microsoft 365 licences you already have. Dataverse pays off for complex data models, fine-grained permissions and large data volumes – as in the PLM system for Armacell with more than 100,000 migrated records.
Apps built on SharePoint lists and standard connectors are already included in many Microsoft 365 plans; Dataverse and premium connectors require premium licences per user or per app. As Microsoft adjusts prices and models regularly, we check in the analysis phase which licensing model is the most economical for you.
